Fly Species Identification & Diagnostic Indicators
Different fly species originate from completely different breeding environments. Accurately identifying the fly species is the decisive first step toward permanent source eradication.
6 Household & Commercial Fly Species
Distinguishing physiological traits and breeding preferences to locate underlying sanitation vectors.
House Fly (Musca domestica)
6 to 7 mm adult with gray thorax marked by 4 dark longitudinal stripes. Sponging mouthparts that regurgitate digestive enzymes onto solid human food, transferring Salmonella and Shigella.
Drain Fly / Moth Fly (Psychodidae)
Tiny 2 to 5 mm moth-like flies with fuzzy, hairy wings held roof-like over the body. Adults breed in gelatinous organic biofilm coating bathroom floor drains and sewage pipes.
Fruit Fly (Drosophila melanogaster)
Small 3 to 4 mm flies with prominent bright red eyes and tan bodies. Rapidly attracted to fermenting kitchen fruits, vegetable peels, vinegars, and unwashed bar taps.
Flesh Fly (Sarcophagidae)
Large 10 to 14 mm robust flies with 3 dark stripes on the thorax and a checkerboard patterned abdomen. Attracted to decaying meat, dead rodents in ceilings, and open animal waste.
Phorid Fly / Scuttle Fly
Small 1 to 4 mm hump-backed flies that characteristically run erratically across kitchen counters and drain rims before taking flight. Breed in buried broken sewer pipes and contaminated soil.
Cluster & Blow Flies (Calliphoridae)
Metallic blue, green, or bronze sheen bodies (8–10mm). High buzzing flight indoors indicating nearby dead animal carcasses or decaying garbage accumulation in service ducts.
The Clear Tape Test: Confirming Drain Fly Sources
If you notice fuzzy moth-like flies in bathrooms or utility areas, use this forensic diagnostic method to identify the exact breeding drain:
Dry the Drain Opening Thoroughly
Ensure the metal grate of the shower drain or floor trap is completely dry before bedtime.
Affix Strips of Clear Packing Tape Sticky-Side Down
Cover a portion of the drain opening with clear tape, leaving small gaps for airflow so rising air doesn't dislodge the tape.
Inspect the Underside the Following Morning
Newly emerged adult flies climbing upward out of the pipe biofilm will stick to the adhesive underside, confirming that specific pipe trap as an active breeding site.
